Rubindium crystals

Rubindium crystals

Spock's rubindium laser, remastered

Used as a laser

For the similarly named element, please see rubidium.

Rubindium is an element found in crystalline form, used in subcutaneous transponders and other communications technology. It could also be used to emit a powerful laser beam.

While Captain Kirk and Spock were imprisoned on Ekos in 2268, Spock used rubindium crystals from the transponders implanted in their arms to improvise a crude, makeshift, and primitive laser cutting torch to escape. (TOS: "Patterns of Force")

Rubindium was necessary in the construction of the 23rd century Crossfield-class's transtator, making both internal and external communications possible. When the USS Discovery's transtator was damaged beyond repair in 3189, they were not carrying enough rubindium on board to reconstruct it, though a nearby settlement on The Colony had an ample supply of it. (DIS: "Far From Home")

Malinne Ravel's mother was forced to take a job in a rubindium mine on Callor V after her husband abandoned them, leading to her death when Malinne was fourteen years old. (DIS: "Mirrors")

According to the Starfleet Medical Reference Manual, (p.18) the element rubindium, symbol Rd, atomic weight 314, atomic number 120, was first discovered by Humans in the asteroid belt in 2038.
