A riding crop was a short whip used to goad a mount, such as a horse.
When Captain Carol Freeman was due to be promoted in 2381, Ensign Beckett Mariner said that she did not want a new captain to be transferred to the USS Cerritos because she and the other crew members could potentially receive "some weirdo with a riding crop." (LD: "First First Contact")
Later that year, Doctor T'Ana wielded a riding crop while exhorting her staff to prepare for a "second contact race" with the USS Aledo. (LD: "The Stars At Night")
