Police making arrests on 892-IV in 2268.

Law enforcement or the police were a series of forces that served as a type of security group to ensure laws and rules were obeyed, and that order and peace was the norm on a planet, or in space under a planet's jurisdiction. Police officers also tended to have authority to take criminal suspects in for questioning, conduct investigations into criminal activities, and arrest those who break the law, such as wanted criminals. Police were often identified by uniform. Police forces kept extensive records on various individuals that were suspected to be or were criminals. (DS9: "Heart of Stone", et al.)

On Miri, the Onlies played a mock classroom game, where Jahn pointed out that the captured James T. Kirk was "a very bad citizen." As one of the students, a little girl, yelled "Call the police!" A second student, an older boy claimed that he was the police and warned Kirk, "Bonk bonk unless you're good." When Jahn reminded the other boy that he was the teacher, the boy claimed, "I got two jobs. Bonk bonk!" (TOS: "Miri")

Harry Mudd described the Denebians as having "typical police mentality" after they contacted the Vulcans and discovered that Mudd did not have the rights to a Vulcan fuel synthesizer he was attempting to sell on Deneb V. According to Mudd, "They've got no sense of humor. They arrested me." (TOS: "I, Mudd")

On Starfleet vessels, starbases and other installations, the security division was normally in charge of police activities as part of their duties. One exception was the use of Bajoran officers on Deep Space 9, under the command of Constable Odo. (DS9: "Emissary", etc.)

The police were mentioned in an article in the Q Continuum magazine The New. (VOY: "Death Wish")

After an incident where Jean-Luc Picard and Dahj Asha were attacked near the Starfleet Archive Museum, Picard was found by the police. They checked the security feed but did not see anyone but Picard. (PIC: "Remembrance")
