Petty theft was the term for stealing an object with a relatively small value. Legal authorities considered it less severe than grand larceny.

In 2268, two petty thieves from the City Prison of planet 892-IV fought to the death in the gladiatorial arena games. (TOS: "Bread and Circuses")

In 2369, Constable Odo stated that Quark did not commit petty thefts. (DS9: "The Forsaken")

In 2370, however, Odo sarcastically told Quark he'd miss the petty theft just before Quark attempted to depart Deep Space 9. (DS9: "The Siege")

Also that year, there were twelve outstanding arrest warrants for fraud and petty theft against Yranac in the Klingon Empire. (TNG: "Gambit, Part I")

In 2372, Odo held Trelos Vren on four charges of petty theft. (DS9: "Indiscretion")

The same year, Odo listed off a number of crimes during his daily report to Kira, and listed "three petty thefts, two incidents of disorderly conduct, one assault…" (DS9: "Crossfire")

In 3191, in the Federation Watch List for Moll, petty theft was listed with other crimes that she had committed during her career as a professional criminal. (DIS: "Mirrors")
