Background information[]

• While the Region 2 UK release had not, the slightly earlier released EU releases had their special features split off onto a separate fourth disc, as had been the case with the Region 4 release.
• The four-month release delay for Region 2 is a break in the near simultaneous all regions release tradition, which became commonplace when introduced a little while into the Blu-ray era, and harkens back to the home video release practices of the pre-Blu-ray era. The partial return to the practice is almost certainly conceived as a compromise between the industry and Amazon Prime, the first-time streamer of the series for the rest of the world outside North America, and who has commercial incentives for delaying a home video format for as long as possible. • Excerpts from all special features were already featured as bonus featurettes in The Ready Room second season episodes dealing with Picard's first season. However, almost none of these were actually included as such on the home video formats as eventually released, with the exception of the La Sirena set tour (part of the "Set Me Up" featurette on disc three) which was previously showcased in the TRR: "Away Mission Special" of the aftershow. Particularly noteworthy was the complete absence on the home video releases of the visual effects subject matter, actually presented as a special featurette in the fourth episode of the aftershow. This particular policy remained adhered to for all subsequent Kurtzman-era Star Trek home video format releases that have followed suit. [1]
• This particular release is one of the few individual Star Trek releases followed by the professional industry site The Numbers and for which domestic (US & Canada) home video format sales are known; The Numbers has reported that two years into its release, October 2022, domestic sales had been realized of US$10.2 million for both this and its Blu-ray counterpart releases, which at an average DVD/Blu-ray retail price of US$40 translates into 255,000 units sold. [2] While these seemingly disappointing sales for an eagerly awaited Star Trek show could be explained by the sharply divided fan reception Kurtzman-era Star Trek had engendered, there were by this time also generic societal trend issues in play, which had nothing to do with Star Trek, additionally explaining the diminishing sales of physical home video formats. (see: main article) Still, of all the Kurtzman-era Star Trek productions, this was the one that by the end of 2022 had performed best in the home video format department.
