An operating system or OS was a collection of computer files that managed a computer's resources.

At some point during the mid-23rd century, the USS Enterprise computer ran on version 36.11.4 of the OS. (ST: "Q&A")

In a recording altered by the T'Lani in 2370, Chief O'Brien was shown accidentally activating a radiation pulse which was part of a security program in the operating system of the T'Lani and Kellerun data banks. The pulse reportedly lead to his and Doctor Bashir's death, though the entire sequence of events was falsified. (DS9: "Armageddon Game")

In 2371, during their conversion of Deep Space 9's Ore Processing Unit Five into a deuterium refinery, O'Brien planned on showing Jake Sisko how to download the new operating system as soon as he finished deleting old Cardassian files. (DS9: "Civil Defense")

Lt. Tuvok had difficulty decoding the operating system of the cryostasis chambers found on a class L planet in 2371. (VOY: "The 37's")

In late 2373, Commander Worf ordered Cadet Nog to go to the USS Defiant engine room and download the operating system into the computer core one file at a time after their attempts to increase the phaser relay efficiency did not work. (DS9: "Soldiers of the Empire")

After the Attack on Mars in 2385, Starfleet Command determined that the A500 synth units were compromised due to a "fatal code error" in their operating system. (PIC: "The End is the Beginning")

In 3189, after the Emerald Chain took over the USS Discovery, Commander Michael Burnham rebooted the ship's operating system to the system that the ship had before its futuristic upgrades, allowing her to regain control of the Discovery. Along with a change in operating system came a change in the computer voice from male to female. (DIS: "That Hope Is You, Part 2")
