The Nepenthian red-winged banshee was a type of bird native to Nepenthe. It resembled a two-headed woodpecker and had a raucous call.

In 2401, while complaining about life on Nepenthe, Deanna Troi and William T. Riker discussed how horrible Nepenthian red-winged banshees sounded in the morning, likening them to "screaming babies". They then mused, "You know what they say, the only thing worse than a woodpecker... is a two-headed woodpecker." (PIC: "Surrender")
