Neema was a Trill and the daughter of Audrid Dax.
When she was six, she was hospitalized after contracting Rugalan fever. For the next two weeks, her mother did not leave her side and read all seventeen volumes of Down the River Light to her, even though Neema couldn't hear her. The child pulled through. Years later, at age 21, she stopped talking to her mother and would not speak to her again for about eight years. (DS9: "Nor the Battle to the Strong")
The short story "Sins of the Mother" gives her full name as Neema Cyl, Cyl being the symbiont she was joined with. Neema also had a counterpart in the mirror universe, who appears in The Sorrows of Empire.
