For the Star Trek: Discovery makeup artist, please see Michael O'Brien.

Michael O'Brien was the father of Miles O'Brien and at least two other sons. (TNG: "Disaster"; DS9: "Invasive Procedures")

Michael occasionally spanked Miles when he misbehaved. When his wife was pregnant, Michael would give her massages to lighten her mood. (DS9: "Cardassians", "Looking for par'Mach in All the Wrong Places")

Michael hoped that his son would become a cello player. Michael sent a recorded audition to the Aldebaran Music Academy when Miles was seventeen, and his son was offered a place there. Although initially furious with his son's decision to apply to Starfleet instead, Michael calmed down when he saw how much Miles wanted to join. Eventually, Michael became proud of Miles and his accomplishments and started introducing him as, "My son, Senior Chief Specialist Miles Edward O'Brien". (DS9: "Shadowplay")

Michael O'Brien was once invited on board the USS Enterprise-D sometime prior to 2367, a starship on which his son Miles was serving on. He later embarrassed Miles by chasing Nurse Stanton around a biobed in sickbay. (TNG: "Family")

Miles was initially keen to naming his firstborn after Michael, but this ultimately became moot. (TNG: "Disaster")

Michael's first wife died in 2368, and he remarried the following year. By 2372, Michael and his new wife were residing in Dublin. (DS9: "Whispers", "Homefront")

In 2375, O'Brien told Benjamin Sisko he was visiting his father, although he was actually going to New Sydney to investigate Morica Bilby's disappearance. Julian Bashir claimed that O'Brien had only implied that. (DS9: "Prodigal Daughter")

This character was only mentioned in dialogue.
