Mettus was a Denobulan and the youngest son of Doctor Phlox.
According to Phlox, both Mettus and his older brother – Phlox's second youngest – never saw "eye-to-eye" with their father and the two had not spoken with Phlox for sometime prior to 2152. (ENT: "A Night in Sickbay")
He rejected his father's attempts to raise him free of prejudice against the Antarans. Mettus unfortunately accepted the views of other influences in his life, choosing instead to embrace the prejudices, creating a rift between him and his father. This caused the two to become estranged for ten years.
Phlox related his son's decision to Hudak in 2153. Afterward, Phlox attempted to contact Mettus for the first time in years, despite the chances of his responding being "slim". (ENT: "The Breach")

According to the novel Live by the Code, his full name is Mettus-sollexx-oortann. When Mettus' sister Vaneel married an Antaran, Mettus and a group of Denobulan extremists crashed the wedding and murdered the groom's father. Mettus was later kidnapped by an Antaran extremist group called the True Sons of Antar, who intended to execute him for the crime. Phlox was able to rescue his son and Mettus was taken into custody by Antaran authorities. In prison, Mettus reconciled with his father and began to change his anti-Antaran beliefs.
