A law enforcement officer was an individual who was employed by a law enforcement agency for the purpose of enforcing the law, apprehending criminals, and keeping the peace in a civilian population.
After the Great Link changed Odo from a Changeling to a Human in 2372, he explained to Captain Benjamin Sisko that all that remained of his sense of being was his job, adding "Besides, I'm still the best law enforcement officer on this station." Sisko wholeheartedly agreed, responding that he was not only "the best law enforcement officer in this sector. Maybe the whole damn quadrant." (DS9: "Broken Link")
After B'Elanna Torres was convicted of thinking violent thoughts on the Mari homeworld in 2374, Lieutenant Commander Tuvok attempted to continue the investigation into the matter, questioning the planet's Chief Investigator Nimira, whether or not all the evidence had been investigated. Nimira took offense to Tuvok's implications and explained that in regards to his followup investigation, she, "as a fellow law enforcement officer, [..] should understand." (VOY: "Random Thoughts")
