The Kwejian were a humanoid species native to the planet Kwejian. (DIS: "The Sanctuary")

History[]

The Kwejian were a pre-warp civilization until the 31st century. The Burn shifted the orbit of Kwejian's moon, which changed the planet's tides and caused vast numbers of sea locusts to emerge from the ocean and devour the Kwejian harvest. Facing the starvation of millions, the Kwejian accepted a deal from the Emerald Chain to exchange their trance worms for a sea locust repellent. Kwejian scientists worked for years to find another way to deal with the locusts, without success.

In 3189, Emerald Chain leader Osyraa withheld the sea locust repellent to pressure Kyheem into delivering his brother Cleveland Booker to her. In response, the USS Discovery arrived at Kwejian and confronted Osyraa's flagship Viridian. Osyraa opened fire on the planet, but was ultimately forced to withdraw after the Viridian was disarmed by Booker's ship. The Discovery crew then devised a means to amplify the electromagnetic connection between the sea locusts, allowing Booker and Kyheem to combine their empathic abilities and persuade the swarm to return to the sea. (DIS: "The Sanctuary")

In 3190, a gravitational anomaly entered the Kwejian system and shattered Kwejian's moon, which then collided with the planet, destroying it and its inhabitants. The Federation attempted to locate survivors of the cataclysm but failed to find any other than Booker. (DIS: "Kobayashi Maru", "Anomaly (DIS)") It later emerged that someone engineered what was now known as the Dark Matter Anomaly, meaning the Kwejian species had been the victims of genocide. (DIS: "The Examples")

Biology[]

Kwejian physically resembled Humans. Infrequently, some of them exhibited the empathic ability to influence plants and animals; Booker described the appearance of such individuals in the gene pool as a result of "balance". Kwejian empaths activated their ability with a ritual chant, during which a glowing pattern appeared on their foreheads. The pattern could also appear in moments of strong emotion. (DIS: "That Hope Is You, Part 1", "The Sanctuary")

Kwejian had one heart, and adrenaline that acted in a similar manner to Humans. (DIS: "That Hope Is You, Part 2")

Society and culture[]

The Kwejian resided in an area of their planet called the Sanctuary, which was protected by a sophisticated defense system and ruled by the Steward of the Sanctuary. Common Kwejian gestures of affection included clasping one another's forearms and touching their foreheads together. A gesture of goodbye was to touch their foreheads with the fingertips of the right hand, then turning that hand outward. Their language was written vertically. (DIS: "The Sanctuary")

An old Kwejian saying was: "Never return from a hunt without enough bait for the carrion reaver." (DIS: "Mirrors")

The Kwejian had a coming-of-age ceremony called Ikhu Zhen where young Kwejians received an amulet filled with the sap of the World Root. (DIS: "Kobayashi Maru")

In Kwejian society, a Melai'Zhi was a speaker for the dead. (DIS: "...But to Connect")
