Kuiper belt

A Kuiper belt

A Kuiper belt was a collection of planetoids found in the outer regions of a star system. In contrast to rocky asteroid belts, Kuiper belts tended to contain objects made of ice.

In 2375, Odo and Weyoun 6 attempted to evade four pursuing Jem'Hadar attack ships by hiding in a nearby star system's Kuiper belt, taking their runabout, the USS Rio Grande, into the interior of a large chunk of ice and powering down. The Jem'Hadar forced them out of hiding by destroying every large ice chunk in range. (DS9: "Treachery, Faith and the Great River")

According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia, 4th ed., vol. 1, p. 447, the Kuiper belt was a reservoir for short-period comets. This was in comparison to the Oort cloud, which was a reservoir for long-period comets. This astronomical object was named for the Dutch-born American astronomer Gerard Kuiper (1905-1973). He was best known for his study of the surface of Earth's moon, his discovery of Miranda and Nereid, and his discovery of the atmosphere on Titan.
