Koala speaks to Boimler

The koala during Boimler's death

Koala

The koala during O'Connor's ascension

"The universe is balanced on the back of a giant koala! Why is he smiling? What does he know?!"
– O'Connor, 2380 ("Moist Vessel")

The koala was a god-like entity similar in appearance to the Earth marsupial. The being was witnessed by several members of the crew of USS Cerritos while in the state of ascension or reversible brain death. (LD: "Moist Vessel", "First First Contact", "Mining The Mind's Mines", "In the Cradle of Vexilon")

Characteristics[]

The being's appearance was that of a negative image of a regular koala. It was capable of speech, but spoke backwards. (LD: "In the Cradle of Vexilon")

History[]

In 2380, Lieutenant jg O'Connor mentioned to Ensign D'Vana Tendi that he could see a giant koala with the universe resting upon its back during his ascension. (LD: "Moist Vessel")

The following year, Ensign Brad Boimler claimed to have seen a koala after he nearly drowned in Cetacean Ops. He, too, related his experience to Tendi, who politely suggested that Boimler keep that piece of information to himself. (LD: "First First Contact")

Later that same year, when Lieutenant Commander Steve Stevens was pronounced brain-dead for ten minutes after being turned to stone, he claimed he saw a koala sitting atop a black mountain. (LD: "Mining The Mind's Mines")

In Boimler's holoprogram Crisis Point II: Paradoxus, a holographic street preacher on Tatasciore IX exclaimed that "the koala smile[d] on [them] all." (LD: "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus")

When the recently-promoted Lieutenant jg Boimler briefly died on Corazonia, he found himself in a room with a window, through which he could see a Black Mountain. Before him, he saw the koala in the chair. The koala spoke to him in reverse, and said, "It's not your time, Bradward Boimler.", after which Boimler was revived by Doctor T'Ana. (LD: "In the Cradle of Vexilon")

When Badgey becomes an omnionent AI and ascended to a higher realm, he opened a portal where the koala was brielfy visible on the other side. (LD: "A Few Badgeys More")

The koala was voiced by an unknown performer in "In the Cradle of Vexilon".

In the Lower Decks version of the Star Trek Universe logo animation introduced in "Grounded", a koala-like figure can be seen hidden in the background nebulae.

In the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode "Those Old Scientists", a Koala appears as an Easter Egg in the intro, which was also animated in the same style as Lower Decks.
