For the 24th century vessel, please see IKS Bortas (Vor'cha class).

The IKS Bortas was a Klingon D5-class battle cruiser that was in service with the Klingon Imperial Fleet in the mid-22nd century. In 2152, the Bortas was under the command of Duras, son of Toral.

In that year, the Bortas was assigned to locate and capture a refugee ship from the Klingon protectorate of Raatooras. Tracking the ship to a system just outside of Klingon territory, the crew discovered that it had been rescued by the Human vessel Enterprise. The Bortas subsequently engaged in battle with Enterprise, but was disabled when Enterprise lured the Bortas into the rings of a gas giant and ignited the plasma. For his failure to apprehend the refugees, Duras was reduced in rank from captain to second weapons officer. (ENT: "Judgment")

In the Klingon language, bortaS means "revenge." According to the script for "Redemption", the pronunciation for this word was "bor-TAS". [1]

According to the Star Trek: Star Charts (p. 64) and the Stellar Cartography: The Starfleet Reference Library ("Federation Historical Highlights, 2161-2385"), there was a star system named Bortas, which might be the possible origin for the name of this starship, in the Beta Quadrant. The system's primary was a G-class star. It was the site of a historic battle.
