Forensics was a methodology that employed science and technology in order to investigate and establish facts in unsolved events.

Doctor Phlox was fascinated by the forensic techniques used by the Akaali apothecary Riaan. He cited her methods as unrefined but called her techniques far more sophisticated than he expected. (ENT: "Civilization")

In a nightmare that T'Pol experienced, she was attending movie night in the mess hall and watching a movie with Bob Hope. Doctor Phlox told Trip Tucker during the movie that even the primitive forensics of the mid-20th century would have determined that the suspect was too tall. (ENT: "Impulse")

In 2267, laboratory experts from USS Enterprise examined the murder weapon used in the Argelius II Redjac murders. (TOS: "Wolf in the Fold")

Several forensic teams of the USS Enterprise-D were ordered in 2367 to search for any evidence in cargo bay 4 in the form of DNA samples or biochemical signatures to determine who transported weapons down to Krios Prime. Ensign Kellogg was part of one of the forensic teams. (TNG: "The Mind's Eye")

In 2369, Doctor Beverly Crusher made the difficult decision to autopsy Dr. Reyga in order to gather forensic clues to solve his murder. (TNG: "Suspicions")

In 2371, Security Chief Tuvok ran a forensic sweep of navigational control and found traces of Tom Paris' DNA on the consoles. (VOY: "Cathexis")

Elim Garak speculated, after he assassinated Senator Vreenak in 2374 by planting a bomb in his shuttle, that after a painstaking forensic analysis by the Romulans, they would discover a forged optolythic data rod containing a recording of a high-level meeting with the Dominion discussing the invasion of Romulus. Benjamin Sisko added that the Romulans would suspect that the Dominion had the Senator killed to in order to prevent him from returning to his homeworld with the rod. (DS9: "In the Pale Moonlight")
