Field generator

Voyager's field generator

A field generator was a device capable of producing an energy form which could then be utilized for various purposes by the crew of a starship or space station. Field generators were utilized in such technologies as holographic projectors, deflector arrays, and force fields.

Utilization[]

Field generators were utilized in Doctor Ja'Dar's attempts to create a soliton wave-based propulsion system in 2368. The generator consisted of twenty-three field coils working in concert to generate the soliton wave from a point on the surface of planet Bilana III. (TNG: "New Ground")

Field generators were utilized to produce the energy stream of the particle fountain innovated by Dr. Farallon in 2369. In that year, Commander La Forge, chief engineer of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D, noted that Dr. Farallon would overload the field generators if she instituted her plan to increase the stream density in an attempt to boost the lift capacity by 72 percent. Dr. Farallon responded, however, that the overload could by evenly distributed throughout the system. (TNG: "The Quality of Life")

In 2370, Jadzia Dax realigned the field generators on a holographic projector she found along with Constable Odo on a planet in the Gamma Quadrant. This act, along with increasing the system's memory core, stabilized the projector, rematerializing the holographic inhabitants of a village there. (DS9: "Shadowplay")

In 2374, Damar developed a procedure to neutralized the self-replicating mine field deployed at the mouth of the Bajoran wormhole, whereby he would reconfigure Deep Space 9' deflector field generators and refocus the emitters, transforming the station into a massive antigraviton emitter, subsequently isolating the mines in an antigraviton beam, keeping the mines from replicating. Despite an attempt by an underground resistance movement aboard the station to sabotage the plan, the Dominion was successful in destroying the minefield. (DS9: "Behind the Lines", "Favor the Bold", "Sacrifice of Angels")

In 2376, Rudolph Ransom, captain of the USS Equinox, instituted a plan whereby his crew would steal the USS Voyager's field generator, which had been modified to emit multiphasic frequencies in order to create a latticework of multiphasic force fields with which to defend both ships against constant attacks by nucleogenic lifeforms. As Voyager's generator was located next to their warp plasma manifold, obtaining a clean transporter lock was impossible. This necessitated an Equinox crewmember crawling through the access port and setting up transport enhancers. Another crewmember disengaged the power couplings, while internal sensors were taken offline to keep the Voyager crew ignorant of their plot. (VOY: "Equinox")

Despite the force fields being utilized in "Equinox" consistently being referred to as "multiphasic," an LCARS display graphic was erroneously labeled "metaphasic field generator."
