"Our mission?! Spock, you're talking about the end of every life on Earth! You're half-Human! Haven't you got the goddamned feelings about that?!"

A mission, also known as an expedition, was a type of assignment either given to a spacecraft by an organization via an order or where the spacecraft was responding to a spontaneous happening. Each mission had a goal in mind.

The primary mission of Federation starships was exploration of the Milky Way Galaxy (TNG: "Remember Me") As they explored the galaxy, these ships were "to seek out and contact alien life". (TOS: "The Corbomite Maneuver")

In the 23rd century, the captain of a Federation starship could decide if they would take a mission based on its risk factor. (TOS: "The Cage", "The Menagerie, Part I", "The Apple")

When Spock explained to Captain James T. Kirk about the Eminiar-Vendikar War, Kirk asked if there was anything else, and then Spock answered his question by saying that "The Earth expedition making the report failed to return from its mission. The Valiant. Listed as missing in space." (TOS: "A Taste of Armageddon")

Captain James T. Kirk died on the mission to rescue El-Aurian refugees. (Star Trek Generations)

According to Captain Kathryn Janeway, USS Voyager was "on a mission of peaceful exploration." (VOY: "Good Shepherd")
