Displaced targeting was a form of aiming that didn't require a shooter to be able to see what he was firing at.

In 2375, a story Julian Bashir told about Davy Crockett clued Miles O'Brien in to how a serial killer was managing to hit targets while not present with the victims. By attaching a micro-transporter to a TR-116 rifle, the killer could shoot from behind a wall without leaving bullet holes behind. Further, he found his victims via an exographic targeting sensor, meaning he could have been anywhere on Deep Space 9. (DS9: "Field of Fire")
