The Cheshire Cat was a fictional character in the English book Alice in Wonderland.
Amanda Grayson frequently read Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to Michael Burnham as a child, including the portions where Alice asks the Cheshire Cat for direction. Amanda once used this portion to ask Michael where it was she wanted to go, and Michael responded that she wished to see "Home," to see Earth. (DIS: "Brother")
When Apollo suddenly disappeared in 2267, Pavel Chekov stated he had disappeared like the cat in a Russian story. Captain Kirk tried to correct him, that it actually was the English story of the Cheshire Cat, but Chekov insisted it was about a cat from Minsk. (TOS: "Who Mourns for Adonais?")
