A centipede was a type of multi-legged arthropod native to numerous planets in the galaxy, which were described as creatures with "pincers and poison mandibles."
Dansk was a class M planet that was inhabited by a species of giant centipedes. In 2381, Ensign Brad Boimler was assigned to a mission on Dansk, where, equipped with a phaser rifle, he was going to "wrangle giant centipedes"; a tasked he described as "wet work".
Ensign Beckett Mariner, who had already arranged to have Boimler reassigned from the Dansk mission to join the same escort mission she was assigned, attempted to play up the threat of the Dansk mission, asking him "[h]ow are you excited for giant, nightmarish centipedes?" Moments later, Boimler received his reassignment order, to the news of which, Mariner optimistically told him that "[t]his is a blessing in disguise." She further added, "[y]ou really wanted to be covered in centipedes right now?"
When Boimler further explained with Dansk on his planetary review log, "[i]t would've looked great on my evaluations," Mariner said more to herself than Boimler, "[y]eah, assuming you survived," which the startled Boimler responded, "What was that?" (LD: "Where Pleasant Fountains Lie")
