Caves of Makala

The Caves of Mak'ala in 2371

Symbionts communicating

Two symbionts communicate in the pool

The Caves of Mak'ala were a series of interconnecting underground caves in Mak'ala on Trill. Deep within these caves were kilometers of connected pools of a milky substance which was the natural environment of the Trill symbionts.

The symbionts would die unless they were in the milk pools or were joined after a certain amount of time. When living in the pools, they could communicate with one another via electrical pulses sent through the liquid. They bred and were born in the pools.

The Guardians were a group of unjoined Trill who had devoted their lives to making sure the pools were perfect for the symbionts, having the perfect temperature and protein content.

In 2371, Commander Sisko, Doctor Bashir, and Jadzia Dax went to Trill and visited the pools looking for answers to a problem Jadzia was experiencing with the Dax symbiont. (DS9: "Equilibrium")

In 2375, Sisko suggested to Ezri Dax that she could live in the Caves taking care of the symbionts when she considered leaving Starfleet. (DS9: "Afterimage")

The Caves of Mak'ala in 3189

In 3189, Commander Michael Burnham and Adira Tal traveled to Trill in order to repair the connection between Adira and the Tal symbiont. With the assistance of Guardian Xi, the pair traveled to the pools, both eventually submerging themselves and connecting telepathically to work through blocked memories of Gray Tal's death.
