Biogenic material or biomass was any material that was either created by living, or out of a non-living lifeform.
The Borg's interest in assimilating, and ultimately the reason why they could not assimilate Species 8472, was the fact that their technology was biogenically engineered, and was therefore superior to that of all species the Borg had previously encountered. (VOY: "Scorpion")
