The Ballad of Krul was a classic work of Kellerun poetry.

In 3191, Captain Michael Burnham quoted from the Ballad of Krul when asking for Commander Rayner's blunt opinion: "Serve it without a grum of osikod."

Later, when Burnham and Cleveland Booker were attempting to escape a pocket of interdimensional space aboard the ISS Enterprise, Burnham set the ship's tractor beam to oscillate on a repeating pattern. This referenced section four, verse seven of the Ballad of Krul, when Krul calls to his war brother for rescue with a repeating drumbeat of three, four, one, four. Recognizing it, Rayner ordered the USS Discovery to lock onto the beam and pull the Enterprise out. (DIS: "Mirrors")
