Ensign Alans was a Human scientist and Starfleet officer in the late 24th century. He was an expert in volcanology and geomechanics. In the mid-2360s, he was assigned to the USS Enterprise-D.
In 2365, Alans, along with Ensigns Hildebrant and Davies, and another scientist, Prixus, was chosen by Acting Ensign Wesley Crusher for planetary mineral surveys. Crusher's team was tasked with solving the mystery of the geological instability of the Selcundi Drema sector planets. (TNG: "Pen Pals")
Alans was played by Whitney Rydbeck.
In describing the interaction between Alans and Hildebrant, the script noted that the two "are playing off each other. Finishing each other's sentences, interrupting. They're excited because they've discovered something new and fascinating, so they're teasing each other."
