Something happened to me yesterday that reaffirmed so many beliefs I’ve come to discover about the nature of addiction in my years of sobriety.

I don’t go to AA or NA. I attend no meetings. I simply quit. I got tired of living an obsequious existence ruled by a chemical that regularly made me feel awful, shattered my relationships, and stripped me of my potential.

First, a bit about my experiences.

No Resistance, No Control

I’m an alcoholic. That doesn’t mean that I walk around suffering from an incessant lack of control over alcohol. As you’ll see from my story, it’s quite the opposite. It means that once I drink alcohol, something happens in my body, an inexplicable transformation, a chemical metamorphosis, at which point I cannot resist the urge to have another drink. Once alcohol is in my bloodstream, I’m physically and mentally incapable of resisting drinking more.

Some people can have a drink and go on about their day. If I try this, I will feel like hot, freshly-run-over garbage in the filthy streets of Eastern Europe on a boiling summer’s day for the rest of the day (and the next…
