Although Apple has been criticized for its lack of innovation in recent years, it has not been entirely stagnant.

At least in hardware design, supported by the high price of its products, Apple’s engineers can easily experiment with new technologies without worrying too much about costs.

For example, the iPad Pro, which is Apple’s favorite “display technology” testing ground

Has consistently led the forefront of display technology for portable smart devices, from miniLED in 2021 to tandem OLED in 2024.

Although the iPad Pro was not the first portable smart device to feature a miniLED screen (MSI released a miniLED laptop a year before Apple).

A comparison of their specifications quickly reveals that they are not in the same league.

However, not many display technologies that debuted on the iPad Pro have made it to other products.

At least, miniLED has already been abandoned by Apple due to excessive heat generation, imperfect halo control, and high manufacturing costs.

These factors ultimately led Apple to abandon plans to extend this technology to platforms like the MacBook and iMac.
