Apple is working on a top-secret project that could completely transform the company’s upcoming iPhone models for all 1.46 billion customers.

The tech giant is allegedly working to reduce the difficulty of replacing batteries that presently need tweezers and a specialized machine by using a process known as “induced adhesive deboning,” which involves encasing the power source in metal rather than foil.

With the swap, users would be able to remove the battery with a little electrical shock using a direct current power supply, which is widely accessible and used to test and charge electronics.

At least one iPhone 16 model, which is scheduled to launch in September, may receive the battery update this year. It will be added to all iPhone 17 models the following year.

Before the iPhone, changing a battery could be as easy as using your finger to pop off the phone’s back cover and removing the old battery before inserting a new one. However, modern Apple phones need specific tools just to open the back of the device.
