After publishing my original article about America’s ‘cult of defiant ignorance,’ I realized I had only scratched the surface of this vast and complex social phenomenon.

I had made a good beginning — but there was much more to investigate and explore. There had to be a comprehensive Part 2… so here it is. And I’m about to wade into some highly controversial waters.

In contemplating our ‘defiant ignorance,’ I thought back on the past decade in particular, and then it forcefully hit me: almost the entire right-wing response to the COVID-19 pandemic falls under the heading of willful, defiant ignorance.

It’s quite astounding if we think about it objectively: Here in the U.S. — a supposedly modern, ‘advanced’ nation — there was so much resistance to public health initiatives, vaccines, and ‘mask mandates’ that our nation ended up with the highest death toll from Covid-19 of any nation — bar none.

Not only that, but our death toll — which now stands at over 1.15 million — far, far outstripped the death toll of the #2…
