I’ve been following Andrew LaCivita’s career and interview advice for quite some time. His passionate and straightforward delivery makes complex information effortlessly understandable.

Amongst his many valuable tips, the one about “How to Describe Yourself in One Sentence” really resonated with me. The clarity of his structure has proven incredibly useful, and I find myself using it repeatedly in interviews and conversations.

The structure is simple:

  1. Who you are
  2. For whom you do it
  3. How they benefit

Too often, we linger too long on the first point, sometimes never quite reaching the second and third. It’s easy to become so wrapped up in our own story that we overlook the crucial aspect of highlighting the benefits for our audience. This shift in focus can make all the difference in how our message is received.

Let’s put it all together:

  1. I am a <insert role>
  2. Who does <insert responsibilities> for <insert audience/company>
  3. So they can <insert benefit>

Take a look at this example:

I am a Data Scientist who turns data into insights and strategies for companies, so they can grow new customers and better retain existing customers.

So. They. Can.

So simple yet powerful. It was a revelation to me.

It seamlessly connects your “what” with your “why.”

It is telling your listener, what’s in it for them.

Consider another example with Sam Altman:

I am a technology leader who spearheads the development of cutting-edge AI and other initiatives at OpenAI, so they can influence and shape the future of technology and its role in society.

These examples illustrate how this simple framework not only clarifies your role but also emphasizes the value you bring to others, making your introduction memorable and impactful.

I’ve got a little gift for you! Here’s a ready-to-use AI prompt that can instantly craft a one-sentence description for you or anyone else:

In one sentence, describe the job of Sam Altman, using this structure:
I am...who does...so they can...

Example:
I am a Data Scientist
who turns data into insights and strategies for companies,
so they can grow new customers and better retain existing customers.

How would you describe yourself in one sentence?
