Stephen Colbert has passionately jumped to the defense of Milwaukee. The Late Show host took umbrage after former president Donald Trump reportedly described Milwaukee as a "horrible city" in the lead up to it hosting the Republican National Convention next month.

"This man is about to be in a world of deep-fried hurt," said Colbert. "I know from personal experience, you do not mess with Milwaukee."

Colbert subsequently recalled joking about Milwaukee when the Democratic Convention was held there in 2020. Unfortunately Milwaukee's locals weren't appreciative of his jests, which eventually led to Colbert to visit Wisconsin's most populous city for a "formal apology tour."

"I learned my lesson the hard way, and I have since learned to appreciate Milwaukee, the eternal city," Colbert said. "The Paris of Wisconsin."

Trump's team attempted to defend the former president's remarks, stating that he had been specifically referring to crime in Milwaukee rather than passing judgement on the city as a whole.

"Now, he does have a point," quipped Colbert. "Milwaukee has become so soft on crime that this July their convention centre is hosting a convicted felon."
