Netflix's 'The Boyfriend' trailer teases gentle gay romance reality series

It looks like a gay version of "Terrace House", which can only be a good thing.

Netflix has released the teaser trailer for The Boyfriend, "Japan’s first same-sex romance reality series." It sounds like the type of earnest and soothing slice of life content we've been missing since Terrace House ended.

The Boyfriend follows nine men living together in a beach house for a month, taking turns to work at a coffee truck as they develop friendships and learn about themselves. While there isn't overt pressure to find romance, it certainly isn't discouraged if they feel their emotional connections becoming more than platonic.

"We started out wanting to highlight the young men’s friendships and personalities," said executive producer Dai Ota in a statement. "Our focus wasn’t just on romance but also on spending time together and experiencing personal growth."

The 10-episode series will be hosted by a mix of Japanese personalities, all of whom will no doubt have opinions on everything that transpires in the house. Hosts will include actors MEGUMI, Chiaki Horan, and Yoshimi Tokui; singer Thelma Aoyama; and drag queen Durian Lollobrigida.

The Boyfriend premieres July 9, with new episodes released every Tuesday.
