It wasn't broken, so Samsung didn't fix it.

At today's Galaxy Unpacked product unveiling event, Samsung gave the world its first (official) look at the new Galaxy Z Fold 5 smartphone. Just like last year's Z Fold 4, this is a somewhat regular-sized smartphone that unfolds into a tablet-like shape.

It's available for pre-order now starting at $1,800 and it comes in three colors: Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream.

Z Fold 5 specs and camera details

At a glance, the Z Fold 5 looks a lot like the Z Fold 4. Samsung didn't experiment with the form factor or anything like that. The biggest external improvement is the new hinge, which allows the phone to fold completely flat. Last year's models still left a tiny gap of empty space, even when fully folded.

Here's what were dealing with, specs-wise:

  • 6.2-inch AMOLED cover screen with 120Hz refresh rate

  • 7.6-inch AMOLED main screen with 120Hz refresh rate

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor

  • 12GB RAM

  • 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage

  • 4,400mAH battery

  • 10MP selfie camera

  • 4MP under-display camera

  • Rear triple lens array: 50MP wide angle lens, 12MP ultra-wide lens, 10MP telephoto lens

The display sizes, memory options, camera specs, and battery size are all roughly identical to the Z Fold 4.

The big standout here is the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which is newer than the Gen 1 processor that graced the Z Fold 4. As such, expect plenty of performance improvements in this year's model of Samsung's flagship foldable.

It may not revolutionize the foldable space, but if you don't already have one or urgently need to upgrade, the Z Fold 5 might be the one for you.
