HMD announces a Barbie flip phone, hasn't got photos to prove it

Also, the company has a new name, sort of.

HMD Global would like you to know it has partnered with Mattel to launch a Barbie-themed flip phone.

That's pretty much all the details we can give you, as the Finnish company, probably best known for acquiring the Nokia brand and selling Nokia phones since 2016, gave us nearly nothing in the way of specs or any other information about the phone. All we know is that it's a flip phone, that it'll be pink, and that it's coming next summer.

No, really. That's all we have. OK, HMD also gave us a very, very pixelated pic (below), and this marketing spiel: "Promising style, nostalgia and a much-needed digital detox, this retro feature phone will flip the script on smartphone culture and will be this summer’s hottest accessory." I'm guessing HMD hopes that Barbie the movie gets a sequel this summer.

On the topic of HMD, the company's acronym now stands for "Human Mobile Devices," and it will start selling phones under its own brand, though we can also expect Nokia-branded phones in the future, too.

As for non-Barbie phones, the company has plans for those, too, though no details are available at this time. Finally, the company plans to bring another updated version of an unspecified, legendary Nokia device (remember the updated Nokia 3310?) this summer.
