NPower | Launching Tech Careers. Transforming Lives.

STARTING 2021 STRONG!

2020 was a challenging year for all of us. And while we are still in the midst of a global pandemic, economic recession and racial unrest in this country, I remain optimistic that 2021 will bring about a focus on healing our nation, improving our economy and rooting out racial bias wherever it resides.

2021 brings increased urgency to our mission-backed and compassion-based work. Advancing equity in tech, and making space for non-traditional talent from under-resourced communities is more important than ever.

This month we are celebrating our impact, spotlighting partners, funders and students who make our work possible. Our work is only possible with your trust, partnership and support. Collectively, we can continue to improve the lives of individuals, families and the communities where we live and work.

$298,000,000

Over the past five years, graduates of NPower have earned over $298M in annual salary wages since starting their tech careers. That is $298M which has directly impacted the underserved communities we serve across the country. When we look ahead to the many students we will train and support, the economic impact is exponential and will continue to build. We are proud to be part of the solution narrowing the digital divide, addressing equity in the technology industry, and transforming the lives of those who need us the most.

Evidence of Impact

NPower has launched a randomized research study, with the support of Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO) at the University of Notre Dame, to measure a suite of post-program outcomes. This voluntary study, taking place in the Dallas, Texas and Harlem, New York markets, will assess our program’s impact on students’ employment, earnings, secondary education and general wellbeing as compared to a control group. Preliminary findings will be available in 2023, but we are happy to share updates with you along the way.

Student Spotlight

The Rewired Dreams year-end campaign elevated the voices of NPower students on the cusp of starting tech careers and changing their lives. Their hope and determination inspired action and we have raised nearly $50,000 from individual supporters, ending 2020 on a brighter note. Thank you to those who have donated and amplified our message—you are true allies in our mission for change.
We are proud to close the campaign by sharing the story of NPower New York student Lynette GittensLynette was stuck in a cycle of low-paying retail positions and teetering towards homeless due to COVID instability when she joined the NPower Fall 2020 Tech Fundamentals program. Her exceptional work ethic and commitment to learning helped her to secure a 6-month technology internship with Citi which she started last week. We look forward to watching Lynette join the future of tech.

From Day One Conference

NPower friends, champions and partners Nicole Flowers of Accenture and Andrew Parlock of Northrop Grumman shared their advice and experiences working with non-traditional talent with Kim Mitchell, NPower. They defined what non-traditional talent means to them and described how they recruit, retain and cultivate employees from talent pipelines like NPower. Learn about the successful development strategies they have implemented within their organizations.

“At Accenture, we had to adapt our thinking as well as our recruitment and training methods to recognize that our non-traditional talent may be at different places in their learning journey.”

—Nicole Flowers

“You’ve got to work within your organization and not be afraid to change processes. If we can do it at Northrup Grumman, I have faith it can be done just about anywhere.”

—Andrew Parlock

In Gratitude

Silicon Valley has been recognized as the epicenter of tech innovation, yet opportunities are not equally distributed to the region’s low-income residents. The Sobrato Family Foundation is on a mission to open opportunity pathways and has supported NPower California’s life-changing work since 2017.
