NPower | Launching Tech Careers. Transforming Lives.

From the Frontlines

An update on the NPower program during COVID-19

Dear Friends,

While we are all facing unchartered territory because of COVID-19, we at NPower recognize that in moments of crisis our communities sustain us and innovation can thrive. Our hearts go out to anyone who's been impacted by the virus, either directly or indirectly. We want to share some updates on how we are moving our mission forward during this time.

A Productive Remote Workforce

In the interest of public health, employees all across the country are working remotely and we have already seen an increase in productivity on all fronts. The support and use of Zoom technology has enabled real-time communications between staff, students and employer partners, so we don’t miss a beat when scheduling virtual interviews, group brainstorms or social-emotional support needs. We are finding that social distancing and remote working are actually bringing people together more than ever.

Virtual Learning Classrooms

Led by NPower’s National Instructors Institute, we have expeditiously transitioned our classrooms into virtual learning environments for our students. We have assessed and deployed devices and internet access to all students in need. And we have provided standardized training to all instructors on how best to adapt their lesson plans to engage students virtually. In addition we have introduced learning modules into our curriculum that address some of the technology needs experienced by remote workforce, including virtual troubleshooting, computer network segmentation, cloud solutions, web-based email support, and trouble ticket communications.

The virtual environment also makes it possible for personal and professional skill building that is integral to the NPower model. Now IT executives who volunteer their time to speak with a class, can stream their advice and inspiration to all students nationwide. And, probably most importantly, students can continue to communicate and encourage one another during this time. NPower’s programs remain fully operational and we intend to graduate close to 400 tech professionals this summer that are skilled and ready to work.

See how NPower students are responding to our virtual learning environment.

“So far, the transition from in-person to online classes has been a positive one. It adds to the routine and structure of my daily life, allows me to be consistent in my IT studies and keeps me connected with my other classmates in these times of isolation.”

Rasheed Bradley - Baltimore, Maryland

Student Outlook

NPower students are quickly adapting to the virtual learning environment. Many remain optimistic about continuing the momentum they had during in-class instruction. Many others are relieved to more readily balance their at-home obligations while continuing their studies. The biggest lesson for them (and all of us), is that so much can be achieved working virtually and that the very technology they are trained to support is vital to individuals, businesses and communities during times of unrest.
“The transition to online learning has been great! The main reason is that it is another area of technology that we are having the opportunity to learn.”

Anthony Sutter, U.S. Navy - Dallas, Texas

Pipeline of Tech Talent

As we all adjust to working in a virtual world, we recognize that the IT support needs of companies large and small are magnified. Many are challenged with managing a remote workforce while contending with a critical shortage of IT workers. And while the immediate crisis facing all of us remains paramount, we recognize that the longer term economic impact will need considerable focus. NPower graduates are well-positioned to join your remote teams and provide support through internship, contract or full-time work.

Your Support

We cannot do this work alone. We are grateful to the supporters, alumni, partners and advocates who believe in our mission and value our contributions to local communities and businesses alike. If you are interested in donating your time please contact volunteering@npower.org to schedule a virtual class visit. And you can also help sustain our work with a generous donation to NPower’s emergency fund. Please DONATE NOW.
We wish you the best as we continue to move our mission forward and improve the lives of those who need us most.
 Sincerely,
Bertina Ceccarelli
