In Appreciation of the History, Culture, and Contributions of the Hispanic Community

It has been a busy summer at NPower. We had the opportunity to participate in many important conversations, engage new partners and funders, and welcome a new class of trainees from around the country - including an inaugural class in North Carolina! This new cohort of students will be well on their way to launching new careers and blossoming into tech professionals.

As we move into the fall season, you can feel the excitement and influx of activity at NPower. Here are two moments we are thrilled to be celebrating in September:

  • Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15–Oct 15): our students and staff taking pride in their culture and heritage and continuing to inspire those around them.

  • September is Workforce Development (Professionals) Month - honoring the contributions of our nation’s workforce professionals and raising awareness of the importance of workforce development and job training programs.

Mark your calendars! And learn how you can join us at NPower's Annual Gala on October 17th in New York City, a celebration of innovation and impact. If you cannot attend, you can still support our work anytime.

NORTH CAROLINA TRUIST EVENT RECAP

In an age where tech proficiency has become crucial for many career prospects, the Truist Foundation has awarded NPower a $1 million grant to help enhance economic mobility in the greater Raleigh-Durham area in North Carolina.

This grant will support professional development initiatives and provide career opportunities for 18- to 26-year-olds, military veterans, and military spouses. We are fortunate to have an exceptional leadership team in North Carolina, led by Executive Director Ray Trapp and Program Director Sarah Chick.

“North Carolina was chosen because of all of the opportunities within tech, and the population that we’ve traditionally left behind,” said Trapp. “We’re coming in to fix that, to make sure that population is no longer left behind.”

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Andrea Mallo Jimenez

NPower New Jersey
Tech Fundamentals, IT Support Specialist Fall 2022
Program and Project Management Associate, Accenture

As a first-generation immigrant, Andrea was forging a path to fulfilling her hopes and dreams and creating the life she wanted, working as an insurance financial counselor at a hospital. She had enrolled in college after high school, but pursuing a college education became challenging due to her financial constraints. Andrea began the process of enlisting in the U.S. Armed Forces but realized it wasn’t the right fit for her. Shortly after, she discovered NPower, enrolled in the Tech Fundamentals program, and graduated in Fall 2022. Today, Andrea is a Latina in tech, completely debt-free, working as a Program and Project Management Apprentice for Accenture. As an engaged NPower alumna, she continues to share her dynamic story with others to encourage other young women of color to start their tech journey.

“As women in a male-dominated tech industry, we need to break those stereotypes. At first, it may be scary, but we are making history. We are giving young women motivation to follow in our steps. So why not be part of the change?” - Andrea Mallo Jimenez
