NPower | Launching Tech Careers. Transforming Lives.

It’s National Volunteer Month!

This is a special month at NPower. We are celebrating and spotlighting volunteerism across the country. For those of you who give your time, talent and counsel to NPower students and graduates, we thank you. Your contributions enrich our program, build community amongst our trainees, and enable each participant to build their professional network.

Over the past year, over 1,800 individual and team volunteers donated 5,300 hours of their personal time to support our students. That’s over $1,000,000 in social value. And while the measurement of this engagement is high, it pales in comparison to the impact these interactions have on our graduates and the volunteers that participate.

Whether you served on our national or regional board, guest lectured, hosted mock interviews, served as a virtual coach or mentored an NPower student one-to-one, we are grateful for your generosity, passion, and commitment. On behalf of the staff and students at NPower, we thank you for all your service!

The Value of One.

Herb Hofmann

Vice-President of Information Technology at Loews Corporation

Herb learned about NPower by attending our annual Gala as a guest. The following year, as a member of the Society for Information Management (SIM) New York, he participated in career day activities.
His interest quickly grew and he enrolled in our NPowerMATCH program. He found the one-on-one mentoring to be one of the most valuable experiences of the program. It has allowed him to work with the students directly and experience their knowledge and drive first-hand. Now with over two years of volunteering with NPower under his belt, Herb encourages others in tech to reach out and get involved.

My experience with NPower has changed my mind about the four-year degree. You can see the value of the people who are looking for the opportunity to work in tech and the opportunities are great for them right now. They come out of the program prepared, eager, and productive right out of the gate. If we can get more diversity – more women into tech – and encourage them at the early stages, we’re building the tech teams of the future.

The Power of Many.

Volunteers are a key element of NPower’s program success. NPower offers a wide range of volunteer opportunities for corporate partners to engage employees in high impact, meaningful experiences with the veterans, military spouses, and young adults from underserved communities enrolled in our free program. IT professionals from senior executives to new hires are encouraged to share their career knowledge and experience and help prepare students to launch tech careers with real-world advice.

Special thanks to corporate volunteer partners: Accenture, Bank of America, Broadridge, Citi, KPMG, LinkedIn, McKinsey & Company, Morgan Stanley and many more.

MENTEE SPOTLIGHT

Janely Tecotl, NPowerMATCH Mentee

Tech Fundamentals Trainee, Brooklyn, New York

I’ve had a very positive experience with the NPowerMATCH program. Going into the program, I didn’t know what to expect or know what the relationship would look like, but I would say the program was a success. It felt good to have an outside perspective when struggling at work or with my personal goals. My mentor was supportive, available, and insightful. I believe we’ve built a good and trusting relationship. I also loved the different topic discussions to guide conversation. They were helpful, especially in the beginning when we didn’t know where to start. It’s been a helpful experience for me.
