Given that Hastings is not an insurance company but a broker, they would have already charged a set-up fee in the insurance premium.– Weather VaneCommented Jun 13 at 12:05

@WeatherVane I am afraid that means nothing to me WRT why they would be able to claim it back in such a situation.– User65535Commented Jun 13 at 12:06

I mean that the insured person is charged a set-up fee at the time the policy was taken out. So why would the broker now ask for a set-up fee, when the insured person has already paid it?– Weather VaneCommented Jun 13 at 12:09

The fact that it all made so little sense is why I thought it must have an interesting legal answer.– User65535Commented Jun 13 at 13:15

Guess: they'd closed her account so charged the fee to re-open the old account or open a new account to handle the issue.– mkennedyCommented Jun 13 at 16:06

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. united-states), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
