REGENERATIVE BEAUTY : A NEW DIRECTION It's commonplace for beauty brands to use natural, organic ingredients and to pay close attention to their environmental impact. But it seems that the cosmetics industry is going one step further, this time turning to regenerative agriculture. For years, we've heard about intensive agriculture, which has impoverished the soil. Eco-agriculture, or regenerative agriculture, is the opposite: rather than depleting natural resources, it optimizes them by favoring the cultivation of raw materials that improve the quality of soils, seabeds and all the organic matter of which they are composed. The aim ? To increase biodiversity, enrich soils and mitigate global warming through carbon recapture. BABOR BEAUTY GROUP reduces carbon emissions by 47% "Reducing our carbon emissions is the core objective of our sustainability strategy," says BABOR BEAUTY GROUP Co-CEO Horst Robertz. By 2025, the German family-owned company wants to effectively reduce its emissions by 50% compared to the baseline from the 2019 balance sheet. To achieve this goal, the sustainability team first compiled the carbon footprint (according to GHG Scope 1 - 3) and identified emission drivers. The company has been measuring these in a multi-award-winning, dashboard since 2020. In 2024, the company reached a major milestone: "We are currently at a 47% reduction. The fact that we have achieved this is a fantastic effort by the entire team," says Horst Robertz. "But we have to be honest: given the current state of technology, we cannot yet prevent all emissions." To compensate for these unavoidable emissions, the BABOR BEAUTY GROUP has looked intensively at alternatives and decided to work with the German AgriTech company Klim. The young company from Berlin pursues a vision for regenerative agriculture that binds carbon in soils and, at the same time, improves soil health and biodiversity. Klim Co-founder and CEO Dr. Robert Gerlach: "We are delighted to be working with the BABOR BEAUTY GROUP. Right from the start, we realized that their connection to nature and commitment to sustainable and responsible business was a perfect fit for us. 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝗸 ?  The French government has given clothing brands one month to comment on the future #Ecoscore , which will inform consumers about the environmental impact of new clothes. In the shape of a score from zero to infinity, this Ecoscore will take into account all the environmental costs of a garment's life cycle, weighted by its durability. The score will enable consumers to compare garments and make more responsible choices (but will they ?). Following EU guidelines, the Ecoscore could be made compulsory by 2025, and may serve as a basis for calculating the "bonus-malus" for brands under the bill designed to limit the spread of "fast fashion". A welcome initiative, in line with the desire to reduce the environmental impact of the textile industry. Here's a breakdown of our findings: Performance Winner: Nivea Hyaluron and Alpecin! 🏆 Both impress with their unique shapes that stand out on shelves and deliver top-notch performance. Sustainability Winner: Balea Professional Ultimate Volume! 🌱 The lightweight tube design and efficient volume reduction during disposal make it a standout. Design Winner: Nivea Hyaluron! ✨ Nivea captures attention with its unique packaging shape, clear USP emphasis, and strong brand presentation. Overall Winner: Nivea Hyaluron! 🏅 Scoring high in both performance and design, Nivea Hyaluron achieved an overall PAX of 880, outpacing Head & Shoulders and Pantene PRO-V. There are two industries very close to us and our operation, the beauty industry and the hard luxury one (Swiss watches in particular)... but how are these industries developing? The beauty industry is a quite "safe bet" as over time it has constantly grown 4-5% with the only exception during the Great Recession (still positive growth) and during the COVID19 lockdown period. On the other hand, the watch industry (here represented by the development of the Swiss watches export) is much more reactive both in positive and negative to many factors. On top of the Great Recession and the COVID19, for example, this industry did suffer from other disruptions such as wars, exchange rate, trade terms changes and so on... Some of the reasons for these behaviours are kind of obvious. The beauty industry being an agglomerate of different sub categories (skincare, haircare, fragrances, cosmetics...) and with production dispersed around the globe is able to mitigate certain dynamics. The Swiss watch industry, with (value added) production based in Switzerland and practically "single product" offer is more subject to external and local factors. Yet, there are many more reasons that drive these dynamics and make both of these industries very interesting. Remarkably on a wide time span the performances of the two industries are very similar. For example, the CAGR 1997-2023 is 4.1% and 4.6% respectively for the #beautyindustry and the #watchindustry. And, both are great industries to work with/for! US market expansion - The strategic concerns for beauty brands : Warehouse, Regulations, Taxes. As innovative beauty brands such as Typology and MIRROR WATER are planning a US expansion, what are the risks to manage for European brands ? 1 - Warehouse optimization and labour management : To reduce costs and delivery times, shipping products to customers from a US warehouse is the best strategy. First, location and capacity : The warehouse must be in a centralized location, depending on where the highest US demand will come from. Also, the right strategy could be to have the warehouse in a Foreign Trade Zone, as it will mainly be used for storage and inventory management. The warehouse must be safe and designed in an efficient manner (Grouping similar products, space utilization, clear labelling and indications in the aisles…).  Optimizing the warehouse processes has a direct consequence on the top and bottom lines. Productivity and customer satisfaction will increase due to reduced time-to-process and less overstock or stockouts. Maintaining inventory accuracy, optimizing space and making sure the orders are fulfilled on time can be hard priorities, especially for online businesses. Consequently, the warehouse must have the most up-to-date IoT, software, other digital systems and equipment. In 2026, millennials and Gen Z will make up 75 percent of the purchasing power in the luxury market. But how do they feel? Why do they define luxury differently to their parents? Chief Marketing Officer Marko Jünemann asked them and got some surprising answers. For more than three years, Marko Jünemann has been responsible for marketing at Wempe, and he is now launching a purpose campaign that does not focus on the products. So, what is it all about then? Of course we will. Our new brand campaign is primarily aimed at millennials and Generation Z, in other words people born after 1980. They have a different understanding of luxury than their parents, the product is no longer the main focus. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲? Young people are very self-determined and freedom-loving – they don't like to be categorized. For them, a luxury product is less a status symbol and more an expression of their individuality. A special watch or a fine piece of jewelry is a reflection of one's own personality for a certain period of time. We asked focus groups what young people associate with Wempe. Precisely because we have been an independent, family-run company for generations, people believe that we are better able to respond to individual needs than a large corporation. Tradition, craftsmanship and quality have always been important to us. The younger generations also identify with values such as respect, trust, cosmopolitanism, and empathy. 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄? Of course not, on the contrary: we are observing that people born before the 1980s are increasingly aligning themselves with the preferences of younger people. Individuality and meaningfulness are also important to these generations. Ultimately, we all want to stay true to our personalities– and simply be ourselves.
