Future Europe (LFE) can help towards a smoother transition. We recognise that this can be a challenging process as each company may need to adapt to different requirements, depending always on the nature of their economic activities.
The guidance provided in this document is a summary of an initial screening that LFE initiated to help you understand the newly introduced EU Taxonomy requirements.
LBC is a methodology, a way of creating truly regenerative communities that are socially just, culturally rich, and ecological restorative. One of the activities of the LFE Technical Advisory Group (TAG) group is to develop crosswalk documents on ILFI programs and standards or policies relevant to the European market. The goal of this document is to demonstrate how the LBC and Core frameworks can be seen as a pathway to a safe transition towards a climate neutral economy.
The comparison table aims to bring both LBC/Core and the EU Taxonomy requirements and assess the level of their alignment. The EU Taxonomy and the LBC/Core protocols have a different approach; nevertheless, the authors highlighted how a greater alignment among requirements can be achieved.

RESTORE has addressed the two last-mentioned areas- Rethinking Sustainability towards a Regenerative Economy, in the context of the built environment.

It is not that regenerative thinking is new – it has been at the core of ecological thinking for decades, traced back to acclaimed and influential writers on nature and ecology such as Aldo Leopold, Rachel Carson and many others. Importantly, it has likewise been the foundation of many indigenous cultures since time immemorial.

Its current use reflects the urgency we now face as climate change and ecological breakdown become increasingly palpable. It represents a desire and a focused switch in mindset, away from the mechanistic, away from being only less bad, the common and dominant discourse, to one that is living and sees ourselves and the built environment as interactive parts of the beautiful and complex ecosystem web.

Along with the increased use of the term ‘regenerative’ we have a changing narrative. And this is important, as it is narratives that define us and contribute, in turn, to how we define and shape our future. The future is not something that just happens to us, but it is something that we create. As Arundhati Roy2 noted in April 2020, we need ‘to imagine the future we want and be prepared to fight for it’. Yet, unless we urgently address the level of ecological and climate literacy, and levels of climate awareness within all areas of education, we will not have the narratives, insights and knowledge to imagine our future, to recognize goodness and what it looks like and to be able to fight for it. This publication has a two-fold aim: to summarize the main results from the COST Action CA16114 REthinking Sustainability TOwards a Regenerative Economy (RESTORE, 2017-2021); and, to provide some insight into the project management strategies that are in place for our team, thereby ensuring that the Action will be properly and successfully developed. COST is the longest-running European framework supporting trans-national cooperation between researchers, engineers, and scholars throughout Europe. The RESTORE Action is working for a paradigm shift towards restorative sustainability for new and existing buildings and space design across Europe, through active lobbying and mentoring, as well as through working groups, training schools and Short-Term Scientific Missions (STSMs), advancing the sustainability of restorative builtenvironment sustainability.

In this publication we will firstly provide an overview of what the RESTORE Action is, its challenge, main goals, structure, and main tasks. We will explore in greater detail how we addressed RESTORE, using an internationally recognized Project Management methodology. The voices of RESTORE active members will reflect their impressions and insights on the experience they lived within a COST Action.

RESTORE has seen some great experiences, milestones of achievement, opportunities to explore, although it has also gone astray, as might happen when addressing a new project. However, we have done our best to manage all the aspects, sometimes finding what we thought were brilliant outcomes or at least achievements that deserve to be shared, if only to see whether others thought likewise.

We hope these insights will be helpful for other colleagues involved in either current or future COST network Actions, and in general for professionals dealing with international research projects and initiatives that typically involve a large number of scholars and practitioners from different fields and expertise. There have been huge steps forward in the design, construction and operation of buildings, and yet when compared with the rate of change that is required to avoid the worst effects of climate change and other global environmental challenges, our progress has been minute and barely recordable.

It’s time to imagine a living future and a world of living buildings. The Living Buildings ChallengeTM, developed and promoted by the International Living Future Institute (ILFI) based in Seattle (WA), is a philosophy, certification and advocacy tool for projects to move beyond merely being less bad and to become truly regenerative. The Challenge defines the most advanced measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today and acts to rapidly diminish the gap between current limits and the end-game positive solutions we seek.

To “go beyond sustainability” and foster a real regenerative change, Macro Design Studio in collaboration with ILFI has organized REGENERATION (April, 15th to 18th), the first design competition in Europe entirely based on the LBC protocol. REGENERATION as the first "generation" of young professionals (architects, engineers) that can "regenerate" with their own ideas the built environment. Purpose of the competition is to show the best sustainable regeneration project for an existing public building for the community of Dro, a small village in the mountains of northern Italy, near the Garda Lake.

Il libro si articola in una prima parte strettamente metodologica e una seconda parte che illustra il lavoro svolto su venti casi studio dal progetto europeo EPOurban all’interno della Città di Bolzano. La prima parte introduce, in modo compiuto, gli obiettivi, le modalità, le tecniche, i costi e i benefici di una rigenerazione energetica del patrimonio edilizio. Come si possono tramutare in opportunità i problemi dell’obsolescenza del patrimonio edilizio, quali sono i principali aspetti giuridici della convivenza negli edifici residenziali collettivi, la possibilità di avere strumenti di controllo agili ed efficaci.

E ancora, i principi di progettazione architettonica della rigenerazione, gli aspetti tecnici riguardanti l’involucro opaco e i componenti trasparenti, l’integrazione edificio-impianto e, non ultimo il miglioramento del benessere degli utenti negli edifici rigenerati. In un sistema a economia di mercato tutte queste buone pratiche rimangono sulla carta se non sono supportate da adeguati studi sui costi-benefici e dalle possibilità reali di finanziamento dell’investimento. Il testo affronta, in modo sintetico ma chiaro, anche questi ultimi due aspetti delineando una metodologia di progetto che progettisti e attori del processo di rigenerazione potranno replicare pur nella singolarità di ogni caso.

Un discorso a parte meritano i casi studio – l’esempio pratico dell’applicazione delle teorie metodologiche illustrate – suddivisi in tutelati, vincolati, liberi da vincoli. Ognuno di questi casi è stato oggetto di un approccio di tipo diverso, dovuto alla specialità dell’edificio e delle condizioni al contorno, generando una casistica che può essere presa a riferimento anche per altre città. Negli ultimi anni si è fatta sempre più forte la sensibilità da parte degli operatori del settore edile e delle costruzioni nei confronti della sostenibilità edilizia e del sistema di certificazione LEED che rappresenta per tutti i soggetti coinvolti nel processo edilizio l’opportunità di rendersi attori concreti nella pratica costruttiva sostenibile.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) è uno dei sistemi di certificazione di edifici attualmente più diffusi nel mercato delle costruzioni nordamericano, ma anche al di fuori dei confini statunitensi l’interesse riscontrato a livello internazionale è considerevole. Sono varie infatti le realtà nazionali che, prendendo esempio dal modello statunitense, si stanno attivando per favorire l’implementazione e la diffusione della certificazione LEED a livello nazionale.
Vista la diffusione del LEED rating system, è perciò utile, se non indispensabile, che aziende produttrici di lavorati in marmo, granito e pietre autenticamente naturali in genere si pongano nelle condizioni di fornire ad architetti e progettisti del settore delle costruzioni adeguate informazioni circa le performance dei prodotti lapidei, rispetto alle caratteristiche richieste dal protocollo LEED. L’accessibilità di queste informazioni può rappresentare infatti un vantaggio competitivo decisivo per il prodotto lapideo autenticamente naturale rispetto a materiali alternativi del segmento rivestimenti. We work with our partners on the identification of possible trends, and define development platforms in order to work them out. Platforms can be seen as neuronal connections around a common issue. Il progetto nasce come studio sullo sviluppo della tematica green jobs in Alto Adige. UCCT (Unione Costruttori Chiusure Tecniche) è l’Associazione Italiana dei costruttori, installatori e manutentori di chiusure tecniche per l'edilizia, quali porte tagliafuoco, antieffrazione, industriali, commerciali, automatiche, da garage, barriere, automatismi ed accessori per le stesse.
La certificazione LEED® riguarda l’intero edificio e non il prodotto, essa infatti fa riferimento al sistema edificio e non ai singoli materiali o prodotti utilizzati. Il prodotto gioca comunque un ruolo fondamentale, in quanto contribuisce, con le sue performance, all’ottenimento dei crediti. I requisiti indicati nei crediti si riferiscono quindi al parametro a cui l’edificio dovrà conformarsi per l’ottenimento del relativo credito.
Mediante un approfondito studio del manuale “LEED® for New Construction & Major Renovation, Versione 3.0” e dei singoli requisiti richiesti per ogni credito, sono stati selezionati quei crediti per i quali le chiusure tecniche, attraverso le loro caratteristiche tecnico – costruttive, possano contribuire al loro raggiungimento.
