Fighting has been raging in North Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, for more than 20 years. But earlier this year, hostilities between the M23 armed group and the Congolese army reached unprecedented levels, with indiscriminate attacks on civilians and widespread violence. Nearly three million people have fled to areas distant from the fighting, and humanitarian needs are alarming. There is a lack of shelter, basic supplies, water and adequate sanitation. There are also huge needs related to gender-based violence, health care and food security. https://lnkd.in/dSkwJMyZ

In eastern DRC, hundreds of thousands of people have been forcibly displaced by the violent conflict, with civilians, civilian infrastructure and NGO staff and assets increasingly targeted. Access to affected populations is increasingly constrained, despite staggering and growing humanitarian and protection needs. Urgent action is needed to address the critical needs of conflict-affected populations. Together with the Inter Agency Working Group (IAWG) we urge all relevant actors to make every effort to de-escalate the conflict and ensure the protection of civilians, as well as safe and unhindered access for frontline workers delivering life-saving humanitarian assistance. We are horrified by yesterday's attacks in #Ukraine. Targeting civilians, hospitals and civilian infrastructure is a war crime under International Humanitarian Law. We are calling for an immediate end to such atrocities and unconditional respect for IHL. #NotATarget

On Tuesday 2 July, in a hearing at the Human Rights Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, we presented the serious humanitarian situation in Afghanistan together with three other civil society organisations: Emergency, Afgana and United Against Inhumanity (UAI). The data before us is extremely critical. 23.7 million people, more than half the population, need humanitarian assistance to survive. More than 80% of families live on less than one dollar a day. Rates of maternal and child malnutrition are among the highest in the world. We call for this relaunch of humanitarian action to be based on four pillars: 📍Ensure full funding of the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan, 📍Promote the resumption of development funding 📍Support equitable access to services and assistance for the entire Afghan population 📍Reaffirming the centrality of the active role of women https://lnkd.in/dWP5N8bT
