The Mumbai police investigating the BMW hit-and-run case said they brought the female friend of the main accused—Mihir Shah–to the police station for inquiry and record her statement on Monday as they suspect that she helped him escape.

A senior police officer said, “There is a suspicion that Shah was hiding at her place in Goregaon  and she helped him escape. So, she has been brought in for inquiry.”

The officer said that the accident took place around 5.30am on Dr Annie Basant Road in Worli, following which they took the Sea Link to escape before their car broke down at Kalanagar in Bandra. Mihir is on the run and the police have issued a Lookout Circular against him.

“Mihir switched off his mobile phone and we have learnt that he later went to his female friend’s house,” said a police officer investigating the case adding, “Through technical analysis, Mihir was last located on the Western Express Highway between Kandivali and Borivali.”

Investigators have also learnt that Mihir visited a bar in Juhu, along with four of his friends, hours before the accident, where he cleared a bill of Rs 18,730 around 1am on Sunday.

A police officer involved in the probe revealed that they recovered the bill and CCTV footage of the bar that will help them seek Mihir’s conviction in the case. The officer said Mihir went to Borivali to drop off his friends after leaving the bar.

“Now that the accused has managed to escape, it will be difficult for us to collect his blood samples and prove he consumed alcohol before the accident. We will use other evidence that we have collected.”

Kaveri Nakhwa was killed when the speeding BMW car rammed into a two-wheeler on which she was travelling and dragged her for nearly two kilometres before flinging her on the road. “We have learnt that Mihir and his driver, Rajrishi Bidawat, came to Marine Drive for a joy ride.

While returning, he insisted on driving and subsequently rammed into a two-wheeler on Dr Annie Basant Road in Worli,” said an officer.

Rajesh Shah and Bidawat were arrested late on Sunday under the charges of destroying evidence. “Rajesh and the driver helped Mihir escape while we suspect that they also tried to change or remove the number plate and stickers of the vehicle,” said an officer.
