So editing is not a simple task; but I’m sharing the second interview with Rittika, an interaction designer based in India. Two reasons I started writing: 1. All my design heroes were men: and though some women designers are famous, some are relatively unknown with their unique lives, busy mastering their craft; Sharing their knowledge thru the Women in Design (WIDE) blog, “Not your cookie cutter designer”, is one way. 2. To monetise to provide design education to the underprivileged as an opportunity to give back. UX Thought of the Day 07 - Working with a new team in an unfamiliar domain can be confusing yet exciting. The thrill of exploring new territory is often accompanied by the pressure of task deliverables and accountability. Even with over six years of experience as a researcher, there are times when things don’t go as planned, leading to questioning your self - worth (sometimes personally too). Let me raise todays 'UX Thought of the day' for the ones, who occasionally self - doubt themselves in situations that takes place unintentionally at our professional spaces. Because I know, 1 - It’s okay to fail when you are working in a brand new domain because learning and adapting is part of the process. 2 - It’s okay to fail when managers and users have different perspectives at looking at the problem statement and results because balancing different viewpoints is challenging. 3 - It’s okay to fail when you are not convinced with the problem you are solving because it’s okay to question and redefine the problem. 4 - It’s okay to fail when you are not able to comprehend what is required to work on versus what can be left behind because prioritizing tasks is a skill that comes with experience. 5 - It’s okay to fail when you misjudge user needs because this is a part of the iterative process of UX design. 6 - It’s okay to fail when you don’t receive enough user feedback to validate your designs because it’s part of the process. 7 - It’s okay to fail when your prototypes are not successful because each unsuccessful prototype brings you one step closer to a solution that works. 8 - It’s okay to fail when you have disagreements with stakeholders because it’s part of the process of aligning business goals with user needs. 9 - It’s okay to fail when you overlook some metrics because this leads to learning and growth. 10 - It’s okay to fail when you feel overwhelmed because taking care of your mental health is crucial. We all have to understand, each failure is a stepping stone towards success and it provides a valuable opportunity to learn and grow. I am still learning. Designing for Indian users is a challenging task that requires a higher level of UX skills compared to designing for global users, says Sonia Vora, Head of Product, Narayana One Health. Based on her experience, she says that Indians expect visually intuitive apps and are less patient with lengthy explanations. Moreover, Indian users are mostly mobile-first and they might not be aware of standard icons. Designers also need to consider designing for multilingual support and use simple language and visuals to communicate effectively to people whose first language is not English. 5 things to consider carefully while conducting a Indian consumer-centric UXR study : 💎 Diverse User base : You will have to deal with a diverse population in terms of language, #culture, socio-economic status, and tech savviness. India has over 22 official languages and many more dialects. 👥 It's tricky to connect with users & get authentic insights without knowing their first language. 💎 Cultural Sensitivity : The culture in India has a strong influence of family & #community which makes it crucial to understand the decision making aspects, pattern of product usage & sharing with others. 👥 Understanding cultural nuances like societal taboos, impact of social proofing etc. is important to design user-centric research studies and interpreting the results correctly. 💎 Socioeconomic Factor : We might witness a wide disparity in income levels, access to resources and technology literacy across regions.....with noticeable differences in user #behavior & needs between urban and rural populations. 👥 Research methodologies have to be adaptable to the users with different levels of technology knowledge and accessibility. 💎 Usage Pattern��: Indian consumers by default believe in the concept of re-using, repairing & re-purposing their purchases. And it effectively aligns with the #environmental needs of creating sustainable products and brands. 👥 Research questionnaires must delve into post-sale needs & expectations e.g. easy-return, warranty, servicing, repairing or reselling needs. 💎 Financial Preference : India has a significant informal #economy and has seen a rapid adoption of digital payment solutions, especially post-demonetisation. However, the purchase & payment decisions are highly influenced by their demography, social and economical background. 👥 So, incentive based research studies should offer the rewards or financial perks keeping in mind the user-group they are addressing to. 〰〰〰〰 The necessity for 'inclusivity' extends beyond just the products or services we design;  It is equally critical to have an inclusive research process, particularly in a diverse market such as #India. The demand for qualified and skilled UX professionals in India during 2024 is expected to remain strong. Here are some key insights: The UX job market has not reached the point of saturation. Skilled UX designers continue to be in high demand, with many hiring managers struggling to find top-quality candidates. Despite a downturn in UX job postings since 2022, the demand for skilled UX designers has not decreased. The rapid digitization and evolving technology landscape have made positions for UX designers highly lucrative and in high demand. The UX job market is changing and evolving, and there’s still a notable deficit of skilled UX professionals. In summary, the demand for qualified and quality UX professionals in India during 2024 is expected to be high. This is driven by the ongoing digital transformation across various sectors and the critical role that UX designers play in creating user-centric designs. However, the market is also evolving, and UX professionals need to continuously upgrade their skills to stay relevant.

*Episode 26: Understanding Iterative Design* Design is an iterative process. But what kind of iteration? In the realm of design, here's a common scenario - ❌ Designers often unknowingly fixate on a solution ❌ They become emotionally attached to their ideas, UI, and solutions pushing stakeholders in a single direction ❌ They backtrack to low-fidelity wireframes ❌ They gather feedback and keep making slight adjustments ❌ Then they move to high-fidelity designs ❌ Disagreement from others may upset them But, This is NOT an iterative design process. A skilled designer takes a different path - ✅ They refrain from prematurely settling on a solution. ✅ They maintain emotional detachment from their designs. ✅ They explore multiple concept sketches from varied perspectives. For example, if you are designing a healthcare application, your designs will drastically change if you design it from different perspectives like - patient safety vs data accuracy vs productivity. ✅ They welcome opposing viewpoints without personal offense. ✅ They select the most sensible option or craft a customised solution [as a team]. ✅ They proceed to high-fidelity designs. This genuine iterative process introduces fresh perspectives, potentially uncovering insights that stakeholders hadn't considered. This is how you truly contribute value as a designer. If you've accomplished something like this, make sure to showcase it prominently in your next design interview. 💡 Remember: Iterative design isn't merely about advancing from low to high fidelity. 🧘‍♀️ Honest/unfiltered responses on some common things we hear about UX research : 1. Anybody can ask questions - Well yes, like anybody can dance or draw. It's only the matter of quality that varies with practicing and learning the techniques. 2. Qualitative v/s quantitative is always a debate - No, it's not. Both have very different objectives. Please care to read the definition at least. 3. The sample size is very small - I would be happy to debate if you know or at least are open to learn all the sampling techniques and their usage. 4. 3 unconventional fields where I think UX Designers can be really helpful: 1. Government Services → In India, we often see new government schemes not being fully utilized by the target audience. → UX Designers can help by understanding the challenges people face and designing solutions that reach and benefit more people. 2. Public Transportation → Despite heavy investment, public transportation is often underutilized due to poor implementation. → UX Designers can improve the usability of public transport systems, from ticketing interfaces to navigation apps and station wayfinding. 3. Non-Profit and Social Impact → Many non-profits do great work but struggle to convert interest into support due to lack of funds. → UX designers can help by creating user-friendly websites that effectively communicate their cause, connect with the right audience, and ultimately increase overall engagement. Being in the UX industry for almost 5 years now, I've realized that UX Design is not just about designing better screens for users; it's also about making life easier for customers. Here are some 𝗯𝗮𝗱 𝗵𝗮𝗯𝗶𝘁𝘀 designers can make: 1. Tool Fixation. Figma is prominent today, but that might not always be the case. Remember that with time the design tool of choice changes. While creative thinking and design principles do not. 2. Working in isolation. Often we tend to shy away from critique and team input. But it can improve your designs tenfold. 3. Following the trends. Trends should be seen as a little bit of fun. But avoid following design trends that don’t serve the user’s needs. 4. Ignoring the data.
