CLIENT: National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahai's of India YEAR: 2018 PROGRAM: Architecture STATUS: Competition Entry The design of the Mashriqu’l-Adhkaìr is inspired by Sacred Geometry and the concept of "oneness of humankind" as described by Abdu’l-Bahaì. Starting with a simple circle, the design evolves into a nonagon using sacred geometry, forming the base with 19 circles to create the "flower of life." The structure symbolises the unity of five faiths present in Bihar Sharif—Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Sikhism, and Buddhism—by dividing the volume into five tiers, each representing one faith. The tiers, visible both inside and outside, are constructed with local thatch and incorporate sacred leaves from each faith (Peepal, Date Palm, Bel, Bohr, and Banyan). This design roots the Mashriqu’l-Adhkaìr firmly in the cultural and spiritual landscape of Bihar Sharif, a confluence of faiths. Project: Copper Beach Gardens Location: Akkarai, Chennai,TN Year: 2014 The main feature of the site is an extensive organic garden, and the house was designed to feel incidental. The interior spaces, wrapped around the swimming pool courtyard are designed considering the top of water level as the basis and frame the pool views, responding to it. The building massing was designed to allow sunlight between 10AM and 12PM, thus ensuring poolside lounging would be possible during summer afternoons. The clients being avid star watchers wanted to reflect their passion in the house; this paved the way to the design of ‘Orion’s Belt’ on the bottom of the pool. The play of light and shadow on the eastern side and the foyer is a defining element of the shaded semi open spaces. The fish scale ceramic tiles add a touch of colour to the entire composition along with transforming the space by casting distinct shadow patterns at different times of the day. #shilpaarchitects #architecture #designinspiration #traditional #designlovers #architecturephotography #architecturedesigns #architecturalphotography
