Urban Heat Islands: What You Need to kNOW ๐ŸŒ†๐Ÿ”ฅ Did you know? Buildings and roads in cities can absorb and retain up to 95% of the sunโ€™s heat, contributing to Urban Heat Islands (UHIs). ๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒฑ UHIs occur when natural landscapes are replaced by concrete, asphalt, and buildings, which absorb and trap heat. What Causes This? - Urbanization: Over half of the world's population resides in urban areas, projected to rise to 70% by 2050, thereby escalating the issue of UHIs. - Human Activities: Industrial processes, transportation emissions, and energy consumption contribute to heat retention. - Climate Change: Rising global temperatures exacerbate urban heat effects. Why It Matters? - Health Impacts: Global temperatures are projected to rise by 1.4โ€“5.8ยฐC by the end of the 21st century, leading to more frequent and severe heat waves, droughts, increased precipitation, and wildfires. These higher temperatures increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly impacting vulnerable urban populations. - Environmental Impact: Increased energy use for cooling intensifies greenhouse gas emissions and urban air pollution. - Higher Energy Consumption: Buildings and homes require more energy for air conditioning to combat elevated temperatures, increasing overall electricity usage and costs. Impacts in India: - Urban Health: Urban heat islands, caused by extensive concrete and asphalt, lead to localized temperature spikes in cities like Delhi. Recently, Delhi recorded its warmest night ever at 35.2ยฐC (95.36ยฐF), resulting in over 40,000 heat stroke cases during the heatwave. - Economic Costs: The economic impact of heat stress affects outdoor workers and various industries. Productivity losses occur due to extreme temperatures, impacting sectors such as construction, agriculture, and manufacturing. Combatting UHIs: - Green Spaces: Planting trees and creating green roofs enhance urban cooling and improve air quality. - Cool Materials: Using reflective roofing and permeable pavements reduces surface temperatures and energy consumption. - Urban Planning: Designing cities with parks, water bodies, and shaded areas promotes natural cooling and enhances livability. What We Work On ๐ŸŒโœจ The built environment plays a crucial role in our urban landscape, addressing urban heat islands and promoting sustainable practices. By incorporating green infrastructure, enhancing urban green spaces, and fostering community resilience, we can create cities that are both sustainable and resilient. At @NOW, we're committed to tackling challenges related to the built environment. Through innovation, investment, and cross-sector collaboration, we're shaping a future that's sustainable, resilient, and flourishing for everyone. Climate enthusiasts, join our community to turn ideas into impactful solutions and pave the way for a greener future! ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿค Sources: In the comment section #LearnwithNOW #Decarbonisation #GreenBuilding #ClimateAction #RenewableEnergy

Building a Sustainable Future, Brick by Brick ๐ŸŒ Did you know that nearly 40% of the world's CO2 emissions stem from the construction and operation of buildings? The climate crisis is accelerating, and its impacts are becoming more severe each year. To combat this global threat, we must focus on one of the biggest contributors to global carbon emissions: the built environment.๐Ÿข Why do buildings play a pivotal role? Buildings are essential to modern life, providing spaces where we live, work, learn, and play. However, they are also major sources of carbon emissions: Embodied Carbon: CO2 emissions from manufacturing building materials, transportation, and construction. Materials like steel and cement are highly carbon-intensive. Operational Carbon: CO2 emissions from energy consumption in buildings, including HVAC systems, lighting, and electronic devices throughout their lifespan. Given the longevity of buildings, sustainable design and construction practices can drastically reduce our overall carbon footprint. Why does this matter? 1. Mitigating Climate Change: Reducing the carbon footprint of buildings helps meet global climate goals and prevent environmental catastrophe. 2. Healthier Spaces: Decarbonization improves indoor air quality and reduces pollution, benefiting everyone's well-being. 3. Economic Upsides: Sustainable buildings lower utility costs, increase property values, and create jobs in green industries. 4. Resilience and Adaptation: Sustainable designs and retrofits ensure buildings withstand extreme weather, protecting communities and our future. How are we driving change? At NOW, we are committed to solving hard climate challenges. Decarbonizing buildings is a collective endeavor. We aim to innovate, invest, and collaborate across sectors to build a sustainable, resilient, and thriving future for all. โ€œCalling all aspiring entrepreneurs and startup foundersโ€ to join our community to connect with like-minded individuals and turn your ideas into successful ventures. Together, we can pave the way for a greener future.๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒ Source: World Economic Forum, International Energy Agency (IEA) - Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction 2019, Blueprint for Better - Architecture's Carbon Problem. #LearnwithNOW #Decarbonisation #GreenBuilding #ClimateAction #RenewableEnergy

Pioneering Carbon Solutions: Why CCUS Matters More Than Ever Carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) is a pivotal technology in the fight against climate change. It involves capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from industrial sources like power plants before they enter the atmosphere, then transporting and either utilising or storing the CO2 underground in rock formations. This process includes three main steps: 1. capturing the CO2 2. compressing and transporting it, and  3. securely storing it underground. Importance of CCUS: By preventing CO2 from contributing to global warming, CCUS plays a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from industries that are difficult to decarbonize, supporting renewable energy reliability, and contributing to net-zero emission goals.๐ŸŒWhile planting trees is a valuable method for carbon sequestration, it is not sufficient alone to meet the scale of the climate challenge.  Deep-tech solutions like CCUS are essential because they can handle large volumes of CO2 and target emissions from heavy industries that cannot be easily mitigated by natural means. Technological advancements in CCUS offer more precise and efficient carbon management, ensuring that CO2 is permanently stored or utilised in ways that prevent re-release into the atmosphere. This level of control and capacity is something natural methods alone cannot achieve, underscoring the importance of investing in and developing advanced CCUS technologies.๐Ÿ”ฌ Technological vs Traditional Carbon Sequestration: The distinction between Technological Carbon Sequestration and traditional carbon capture lies in their approaches and applications. Technological Carbon Sequestration, such as CCUS, involves sophisticated engineering techniques to capture, utilize, and store CO2, often integrating with industrial processes. In contrast, traditional carbon capture focuses on direct removal of CO2 from the air, often using simpler methods like afforestation. Technological approaches are typically more scalable and reliable for addressing industrial emissions, making them a critical component in comprehensive climate action strategies. As we advance towards a sustainable future, embracing both technological and natural solutions will be key to effectively combating climate change.๐ŸŒฑ Our Mission at NOW: At NOW, we have seen interesting ideas under CCUS in hard to abate sectors and in building materials. Here we aim to inspire the next wave of sustainability leaders and climate-tech innovators who are focused on developing groundbreaking solutions to fight against climate change. Join our tribe for the latest updates on sustainability, deep-tech, and climate action. Together, we can pave the way for a greener future.
