Higher, faster, further – and more sustainable! 📈♻️ The world of offset printing inks is changing rapidly. “Today, printers are operating in a totally different industry from the one they knew 25 or 30 years ago”, explains Martin Weber, Managing Director, hubergroup USA. He adds “and we, as manufacturers, get challenged by these developments.” For example, faster and more productive presses put more strain on the printing inks. “That requires newly developed raw materials, new resin types, and new binders so we can tailor our future inks to future needs,” says Thomas Griebel, Head of Product Management, SF/UV Offset North America. 🤝🏻 Future needs – that obviously also includes greater sustainability. “We have aligned ourselves very much with the cradle-to-cradle circular economy principle. That's how we live by now when developing and manufacturing,” says Thomas Griebel. 🌱 Do you want to learn more about how we adapt our offset inks to new challenges? If one thing is clear to us, it’s that we do not want to take any potential risks with our ingredients. ❌ For this reason, we adapted our formulation for UV flexo inks even before the EuPIA - European Printing Ink Association recommendation to dispense with TMPTA came into force. What exactly are we talking about? TMPTA (trimethylolpropane triacrylate) is used for liquid radiation-curing printing inks due to its ability to polymerise quickly, curing within a few seconds when exposed to UV light. Based on the EuPIA exclusion policy, the organisation has issued a recommendation to dispense with this substance. According to the harmonised classification and labelling (ATP18) approved by the European Union, TMPTA can not only be very toxic to aquatic life but may also cause serious health effects. As we do not want to take any risks, we have reformulated our UV flexographic printing inks to ensure that they are now free from TMPTA - in the interests of the environment and to avoid potential health risks. 🌱 #printing #inks #EuPIA #UV #flexo #sustainability

What does the future of flexo printing have to do with a rugby stadium? 📦🏉 The answer is called “Flexo Technical day”! Once again, numerous industry experts will come together in La Rochelle, France, to discuss the latest technological developments. But the whole event will take place in a very special atmosphere. On September 19, the Marcel Deflandre stadium won’t be welcoming rugby teams, but all those interested in the future of flexographic printing. How are we going to make packaging even more sustainable? What obstacles await us and how can we overcome them? 🤔 Massimiliano Caretta Fantini, Export Manager Flexible Packaging at hubergroup, will talk exactly about these topics in his presentation “Sustainability in the flexible packaging - Roadmap to sustainability”. Sounds interesting? Then register now: flexotechnicalday@gmail.com #printing #inks #packaging #flexo #flexotechnicalday #france

If you think that white deposits on ink rollers are always lime, you should read on! 👀 If white streaks appear on ink rollers, many people immediately think of poorly soluble calcium salts. This can be caused by the interaction of paper coating containing calcium carbonate with certain acids in fountain solution additives. But is calcium always the culprit? Find out by swiping through!👇 #TintedTruths #printing #inks #fountainsolutions #additives

We are familiar with iridescent surfaces from shiny fish scales 🐟 – so why not use this mechanism for printing purposes? This was exactly our thought process. Therefore, we copied nature in the form of our patented IRIFLOW Technology. What exactly makes this technology so special? IRIFLOW enables vivid effects without expensive pigments. This makes our product cost-efficient, versatile and universal due to its producibility with standard inks – all while creating completely new design possibilities. ✅ Check out our video and take a closer look at the outstanding packaging: https://lnkd.in/dK9xzR3N #printing #inks #technology #packaging #design #printsolutions

Did you know that there is a dark side to black packaging? ⚫ How well packaging can be recycled also depends on its colour. More precisely: on whether it is black or not. Why is that? In recycling, NIR scanners (near-infrared scanners) help sorting packaging waste. They use the spectral properties of the reflected light to recognise which materials the packaging on the conveyor belt is made of. However, the scanner reaches its limits with black plastics in particular: plastics that contain carbon black as a pigment are more difficult to sort as the pigment absorbs the radiation from the NIR scanner. However, it depends on how much of the surface of the respective product is printed in black. The limit is around 50%: If only slightly less than half is coloured black, the scanner usually still recognises the material. However, this also depends on the specific design. Black text or images with black colouring are therefore not a problem. The situation is somewhat different when sorting paper waste. Here, black printed surfaces do not appear to have any influence on sorting. Nevertheless, black printed paper products are more difficult to deink in recycling. It is therefore twice as important to think about the material and colours of our packaging. We are delighted to be working with such experienced partners as epda (european brand & packaging design association) on such issues. Have you ever thought about the influence of colours on recycling? Let us know in the comments down below! ♻️ #printing #inks #recycling #plastics #paper #sustainability

Blinded by the (sun)light – not a problem for our colours! ☀️ You know what we're talking about: the lightfastness of printing inks. And it's not just a question of how long and how bright the sun shines on a printed product. Rather, there is a whole range of influencing factors: 🎨The printing inks used  The quality of the colour pigment, the concentration of the pigmentation, the ink thickness and also the particle size play an important role here. 🖨️ The printing process The lightfastness of colours also depends crucially on the printing process used – above all because certain printing inks are used for certain processes. With screen printing, for example, colours are retained longer than with other printing techniques. Apart from that, the lightfastness of printing substrates (f.e. papers), weather conditions as well as the chemicals and coatings used also have an influence. As you can see, good light fastness requires real printing professionals.  👉🏽 But no worries, you've come to the right place: We always focus on quality and thus also achieve very good results in terms of light fastness. #printings #inks #printingtechnology #lightfastness

Last week we asked you what colour combination we were thinking of... and here comes the answer: 🔴 and 🟢 Although green often represents hope and stability, it also stands for recovery and growth. And of course, red is the colour of love – but that would have been too easy, wouldn't it? 😉 Among other attributes, it also stands for passion and strength. Of course, the answer wasn't quite that easy. After all, there are several beer brands and retail groups that use different colour combinations. The decisive difference in what we think of first when we hear the description is which logos and colours stick to our minds – that's exactly what brand recognition is all about. #colour #printing #inks #combination #brands #recognition
