A not for profit organisation responsible for the collection and treatment of electrical waste and waste batteries.

About us

The European Recycling Platform (ERP), is a compliance scheme set up to ensure cost-effective implementation of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and the Waste Battery Directive through innovative waste management strategies for the benefit of participating member companies, their customers and the environment. ERP Ireland was established in 2005 as a result of the success and expansion of ERP across Europe. In 2017, we collected an average in the order of 9.6Kg of electronic waste per person in Ireland. The target for household portable battery collections as per the Regulations was 45%. ERP exceeded this target with a collection rate of 51%. This marks an impressive achievement and reflects the remarkable shift in the public’s attitude towards recycling.

A new EU Regulation, the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA), has come into effect in Ireland. Europe relies heavily on imports of Critical Raw Materials (CRMs) such as lithium, copper and cobalt. The new Regulation will: ♻️ Strengthen all stages of the European CRM value chain ♻️ Diversify the EU’s imports to reduce strategic dependencies ♻️ Improve the EU’s capacity to monitor and mitigate risks of disruptions to the supply of critical raw materials, and ♻️ Improve circularity and sustainability. CRMs are of high economic importance for Europe and demand is set to increase exponentially as the EU transitions to clean energy systems which require the building up of EU production of batteries, solar panels, permanent magnets and other green technologies. Old and broken electronics and appliances are a rich source of CRMs, so it is vital that Irish households recycle the millions of broken and perfectly recyclable electrical items that are accumulating in our homes or being improperly disposed of. #lithium #CleanEnergy #Ireland

Vape waste emerged as a growing issue last Summer, and our beaches and waterways have been hit particularly hard. Our research showed that public awareness of how to dispose of vapes correctly is still quite low. We linked up with Clean Coasts who work with communities to help protect and care for Ireland’s waterways, coastline, seas, ocean and marine life. The EU recently published its General Report for 2023, which looks at how it has responded to emerging and existing global challenges.   This is an annual publication that comprehensively documents the EU’s key initiatives and achievements over the past year.   Chapter 3, ‘Creating a climate-neutral and prosperous Europe’, examines various topics, including net-zero, biodiversity, sustainability and the circular economy.   The report notes the progress made towards a circular economy, which aims to make sustainable products the norm, reduce pressure on natural resources, cut waste and create sustainable growth and jobs.   Link to the full report can be found in the comments section. #CircularEconomy #Sustainability #SustainableFuture

ERP is delighted to be supported by Minister of State at the Department of Public Expenditure, National Development Plan Delivery and Reform and at the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications , Ossian Smyth, TD and Clean Coasts in our campaign to keep Irish beaches and waterways free of vape waste.    Research commissioned by Clean Coasts last year highlighted disposable vapes as an emerging litter issue on beaches and waterways. Vape waste was encountered in 1 in 7 beach visits, making them even more prevalent on Irish beaches than on Ireland’s streets.   ERP’s latest national research shows some improvement in public knowledge of vape disposal however: 1 in 3 adults in Ireland are still unaware of where to dispose of vapes 1 in 3 vapers incorrectly believe that vapes can be disposed of in the general refuse bin 1 in 5 stated they would dispose of vapes in their domestic recycling bin We are calling on those enjoying Ireland’s waterways and coasts to dispose of vapes correctly via: vape retailers when purchasing a new vape  local recycling centres or  ERP’s battery collection network For the full story, click the link in the comments under this post   #ERPIreland #CleanCoasts #DECC #VapeRecycling #AnTaisce #LitterPicking #BeachCleaning #Beachwatch

Electronic waste is still a swiftly growing waste stream in Europe.    With consumption rates of electronic products escalating, the 65% WEEE collection target is an ever-increasing challenge.   With over 7 million electrical and electric items collected by ERP Ireland last year, we commend the Irish public for their fantastic work.    But we can do even better since research shows there are still a high number of unused electrical items in people’s homes.    This World Environment Day, let's all play our part and put unused and broken electronics to better use by recycling them at your local electrical retailer or recycling centre.   #WorldEnvironmentDay
