Sharing my notes on #350 How to sell like Steve Jobs? - David Senra, Founders Podcast
You are always selling, because you need to convince.
Take the time and effort to learn how to sell. You can have the greatest idea, product or service in the world, but if you can’t convince enough people, it doesn’t matter.
Three things. Know what you are really selling. You need to sell well. Develop a messianic sense of purpose.
Example - What do you do for a living? “Oh, I sell computers. No, he would say that he sells tools that unleash human potential, tools that change the way that you work and that changed the way that you play.“
Start with the customer experience? Why should the customer care? What does it do for me? Then work backwards. The simpler it is easy to understand, the easier your investors can repeat to other investors. It should be succinct in one sentence.
Then you expand on it, and you repeat it a lot. Repetition is persuasive. If you can describe your idea in one line, it will be repeated by your audience. E.g. “world thinnest notebook”.
Don’t sell the product, instead sell the improvement the product makes. People do not care about your product. They care about themselves. They only care about what your product does for them. Sell the future that your customer will receive if they use your product.
Use uncommon, unusual but memorable words. Take something unbelievably complex and use simple and direct language with storytelling to explain to you. Your audience just wants to be informed and entertained.
Your audience cannot remember everything, they can only remember a handful of things, they remember maxims or aphorisms, or stories. Tell great stories that people can remember.
Structure your presentation via a three point list. No. 1, create a list of points you want your audience to remember. No. 2, organise that list until you are left with only three main points. No. 3, under each point, add stories, easy to remember facts, metaphors and social proof. Opening, three stories, and conclusion.
Have a messianic sense of purpose, speak from your heart, dare to be different, and revolutionary enough to change the world.
Do something that you are truly passionate about, and believe in, only then you will find any kind of success. Most importantly, you must enjoy what you are doing.
