In addition to grow and shrink, you can also shrink and grow. Depending on the situation, you may want to shrink first, or grow first. Sometimes doing both can be helpful.

I used this technique to grow and then shrink by a little less, and finish with a feather to allow the edge to be a little soft, while still smoothing out the jagged edges. E.g. grow 100, shrink 95, feather 5.
